Bring on the summer sunshine! Here are my top 10 tips to help you and you're little one have a safe and fun summer:
Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day when possible.
It is typically recommended that babies under 6 months of age don't wear sunscreen, and instead are kept out of the direct sun to avoid sun burn and over heating.
If you need to use a sunscreen on your baby, opt for a mineral or zinc based sunscreen- you can also check with your pediatrician for suggestions.
Use a UV blocking sun hat to help protect their head, face, and shoulders. I like hats that can adjust easily under the chin for a good fit.
Sit under an umbrella, sunshade, or find shade when possible.
Use a portable fan and a cooling/frozen teether when your baby needs a little extra cool down.
Dress your baby in a thin, single layer of clothing.
If your baby is a bit older and will be needing a swimsuit, buy one with SPF for an added layer of sun protection.
Use a swim diaper for water play, as a regular diaper will absorb all that water and make for a big mess.
For babies 6 months+ consider getting a portable activity center, a playpen with canopy, or a fun swim seat.
**Remember newborns can't regulate their body temperature yet, so it's important to keep them cool and protected from the sun. Always consult with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns.
